Pierre Gutierrez was born in Oran, Algeria, and later moved Marseilles, France, where he worked in publishing, design and advertising for several years. In 1998, a move to Carnoux-en-Provence, introduced him to the paintings of the Provençal landscape-painter, Marius Pauzat (1832-1909). This inspired him to try Pauzat's painting technique, and he began drawing scenes from the beautiful coastal regions of the area, and very soon he adapted to watercolour painting and began carving out a niche for himself. Painting became very important to him and he began capturing scenes from his daily life and the landscape surrounding him, and before long his work was being exhibited.
