  • Original oil on board painting, depicting a South African scene, with figures beside a lake in the foreground, and houses beyond, before a mountainous backdrop. This original painting is by the much sought-after, listed South African artist Kenneth Baker (1921-1996), and is a classic example of his work.

Kenneth Baker was born in Cape Town, South Africa and was a self-taught artist who had a very limited formal education. He initially worked as a sign writer in the Cape Town Docks, where he would sketch the workers, before he decided to pursue a career as a professional artist. He painted cityscapes and landscapes and figurative works that reflected life in the 'Shebeens' and poorer districts of Cape Town, and were inspired by the paintings of the German expressionists. He exhibited widely in both group and one-man exhibitions, and today his paintings feature prominently in private collections across the globe.
