Original watercolour painting, depicting farm buildings on a country road, oin a counytryside landscape, by the listed Welsh artist Gwilym John Blockley (1921-2002)

 

Gwilym John Blockley was born in Knighton in Powys, Wales, he had no formal art training and only became a professional artist in his later years.  He left school at 13 and served an engineering apprenticeship, a series of engineering jobs followed before joining the UK Atomic Energy Authority in 1952.  He became head of the authority’s design studio and several of his illustrations of atomic power were displayed at Expo 70 (Osaka), his painting of the Dounreay prototype fast reactor was also exhibited at the Royal Academy.  He devoted virtually every weekend to painting outdoors, in all weathers, to capture craggy mountains, bleak moors and industrial subjects. At an exhibition of his work in 1965 virtually everything was sold, 9 years later he took the plunge and gave up his well-paid job to paint full-time. He never looked back and became a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours, the Pastel Society, the New English Art Club and of the Royal West of England Academy. He taught art for many years and also wrote seven books on watercolour and pastel techniques.
